The Little Mermaid - August 11 - 20 - 2011

THE LITTLE MERMAID

Once upon a time there was a mermaid who lived under the sea with her sisters and her father.  The mermaid and her sisters spent their days dancing though the waves.  One day the mermaid found herself close to the surface, as a ship passed above.  As she poked her head up to catch a glimpse of life above, she saw a handsome prince on board the passing ship.  She knew he was her true love.

Later that day, there was a terrible storm that tossed the ship about.  A big wave hit the ship and washed the prince overboard.  The mermaid, seeing the prince in great distress, swam to him.  Upon reaching him, she rescued him and swam him to shore.  As he lay on the sandy beach, the mermaid revived him by singing to him with her magical voice.  Just as he awoke, the mermaid splashed back to the safety of the sea.  She had fallen in love with the prince and wanted to become human and spend eternity with him.

While the Little Mermaid visits the sea witch and trades her voice for legs, the prince proposes to the princess, whom he believes saved his life.

The Little Mermaid arrives at the ball in time to win the prince’s heart.  With his kiss of true love, the sea witch’s spell is broken and the Little Mermaid’s voice is returned.

The prince and the Little Mermaid get married and live happily ever after.

This past summer Burklyn Ballet Theatre’s Edinburgh Connection Program celebrated our 16th season performing at

the largest arts festival in the world.

Each Fringe season we present a one hour story ballet created especially with children in mind.

It is an experience not to be missed for our performers and the audiences alike.

ABOUT THE EDINBURGH FESTIVAL FRINGE (From the Fringe Website)

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is the largest arts festival in the world and takes place every August for three weeks in Scotland’s capital city.

Every year thousands of performers take to a multitude of stages all over Edinburgh to present shows for every taste. From big names in the world of entertainment to unknown artists looking to build their careers, the festival caters for everyone and includes theatre, comedy, dance, physical theatre, musicals, operas, music, exhibitions and events.

Our story dates back to 1947, when eight theatre groups turned up uninvited to perform at the (then newly formed) Edinburgh International Festival, an initiative created to celebrate and enrich European cultural life in the wake of the Second World War. Not being part of the official programme of the International festival didn’t stop these performers – they just went ahead and staged their shows anyway. Year on year more and more performers followed their example and in 1959 the Festival Fringe Society was created in response to the success of this growing trend.

The Society formalised the existence of this collective of performances, provided information to artists, published the Fringe programme and created a central box office. Its constitution was written in line with the ethos that brought these theatre companies to Edinburgh back in 1947: that the Society was to take no part in vetting the festival’s programme. To this day that policy remains at the core of our festival and we’re proud to include in our programme anyone with a story to tell and a venue willing to host them.
